HISTORY

The cradle of the family is located in Argovia,

SWITZERLAND.

TUT(TUTO) . Family from Zofingen, middle-class from XIVth to XVth century , according to C. Schauenberg-Ott : Stammregister von Zofingen; extincted in XVth century. - NIKLAUS, burgomaster of Zofingen 1375. + Knight-banneret of the contingent of Zofingen in the Austrian ranks at the battle of Sempach 1386. The legend reported by the song of Sempach written by HALBSUTTER, says that he has saved totally or partly the banner of his town by tearing it off the pole just before dying and thrusting it in to his mouth. - JHVG

TUTO or THUTO was also the last name of a family of counsellor from ZURICH in the XIVth century.
In the XIVth century the name THUT was written TUT ( or TUTO or TÜTO). Later other ways of writing it appeared.

Deeds and documents about the THUT can be found in the communesZOFINGEN, SEMPACH, KIRCHBUHL, witch now are part of the district of LUZERN.

The reign of LOUIS XIV encouraged the immigration, especially of Swiss people, who were linked to France by the treaty of "perpetual peace".

Therefore three THUET emigrated from Switzerland to Alsace within a few years at the end of the XVII th century. Hartmann settled down in Hammerstatt, Joannes in Gundolsheim, Martin in Ammerschwihr.
As of to day no relationship was established between them.

We also have the trace of Johanna who came from LUZERN (Switzerland) to SOULTZ(Alsace), before the three above mentioned young men, between 1640 and 1655, when she died on March 18.

In the XVth century, a guard composed of Swiss soldiers was built to ensure the security of the kings of France, completed in the XVIth century by a regiment of Swiss guards recruited by the kings of France and which belonged to the Royal Household.
A captain belonging to this regiment under the reign of Louis XIV and named Thuet is quoted in an encyclopaedia of the family names. It is likely that one or more branches originated in Switzerland developed in the region of "Ile-de-France" around Paris or in the surroundings of royal castles.

Since the end of the XVIIth century, there are also traces of a Thuet family in "The Puy de Dôme" in Solignat and in "Charente Maritime".

The change of the THUT surname into THUET seems to have been done through the gallicization as there are very few THUET in Switzerland while there are 145 THUT families. The other ways to write the name are phonetic transformations.
Part of the THUT genealogy can be found on Mr Christian Heilmann's (Walenstadt, Switzerland) website http://www.gca.ch/genealogie/Thut/thutzen.htm

Emigration in the USA
It happened during the second part of the XIXth century . Brazil, Canada, Chile but mainly the USA were the countries in which the THUT and THUET coming from Switzerland and France emigrated. The censuses of the departures are unfortunately incomplete and the ancestors of some major US families do not appear on the official lists of emigrants.
